129,329 new cars hit Romanian roads in 2022, a 6.7% year-on-year increase on the 121,199 units of 2021. Dacia (+14.8%) doubles the market growth to reach 30.9% share vs. 28.7% a year ago. Toyota (+13.1%) is equally impressive and overtakes Hyundai (+0.2%) to land in 2nd place and the “best of the rest”. Skoda (+8.8%) is up two spots to #4, leapfrogging past Ford (+5.7%) and Renault (+3.9%). Volkswagen (+3.7%) stays in 7th place above Mercedes (+2.8%) and Peugeot (+3.8%) both up one rank, as are BMW (-8.9%) and Kia (-3.5%) despite year-on-year drops. They all take advantage of Suzuki (-39.9%) freefalling to #12. Below, Tesla (+357.4%), Ssangyong (+215.3%) and Audi (+36.5%) stand out.

Model-wise, the Dacia Logan (-14.1%) marks 18 consecutive years in pole position (no interruption since 2005) but falls below 10% share annually for the first time at 8.8%. It hits its lowest ever share for the third year in a row. If the Logan was toppled from the monthly top spot three times in 2021, ending 198 consecutive months in first place (ever since its launch back in September 2004), in 2022 it was beaten no less than 6 times. The Sandero (+3.2%) at #3 in 2022, was #1 in July, August and September, the Duster (+11.9%) at #2 in 2022 was #1 in March and November while the Spring (+122.6%) #4 in 2022, tops the charts in December when it held a record 14.5% share. If the trend continues, 2023 could be the first year the Logan doesn’t rank #1 in the annual ranking. This also means the Top 4 is 100% Dacia for the first time. The Hyundai Tucson (+7.2%) is up two spots on 2021 to #5 ahead of the Ford Puma (-4%) and Toyota Corolla (+7.5%) while the Dacia Jogger lands at #8.

Previous year: Romania 2021: Dacia Logan challenged by Duster, Spring, market off -4%

Two years ago: Romania 2020: Dacia Logan at lowest share, Duster and Sandero at highest in market down -21.8%
