Norway November 2022: Tesla Model Y at 16.5% share, BMW i4 up to record #3, sales up 27.8%

The BMW i4 is up to a record third place in Norway in November.

The Norwegian new car market surges 27.8% year-on-year in November to 19,513 registrations as customers pull forward their purchase before January 1 when a new tax regime will be implemented. It includes the introduction of a weight tax for all passenger cars regardless of drivetrain of NOK 12.5 per kilo over 500 kilos and the introduction of a 25% VAT for electric passenger cars on the part of the purchase price that is over NOK 500,000. The year-to-date tally is now down -13.4% to 134,827. BEV are up 41.2% year-on-year to 15,915 and 81.6% share vs. 73.8% a year ago and are up 5.6% year-to-date to 105,573 and 78.3% share vs. 64.2% over the same period in 2021. PHEV sink -43.4% to just 1,502 and 7.7% share and are hit even harder year-to-date at -61.3% to 12,950 and 9.6% share. This means electrified cars (BEV+PHEV) hold 89.3% of the Norwegian market this month. HEV soar 148.5% to 1,429 and 7.3% share vs. 3.8% a year ago but are down -11.5% YTD to 8,079 and 6% share vs. 5.9% a year ago. Petrol sales are at 1.2% of the market and diesel at 2.2%.

In the brands ranking, strikingly the Top 6 finishers all vastly outrace the market. Tesla (+80.8%) is back on top with 16.5% share ahead of BMW (+196.4%) up to 11.3% share vs. 7.8% so far this year. Volkswagen (+72.3%) takes the third spot at 11.2% ahead of Toyota (+122.2%). Volvo (+87%) and Mercedes (+46.5%) follow. The rest of the Top 10 underperforms with Hyundai (-43.1%) hit the hardest. MG (+254.3%) surges ahead at #11 with Renault (+109.9%) and Subaru (+341.4%) also euphoric.

Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (+217.1%) scores a gigantic 16.5% share thanks to over 3,200 sales. The VW ID.4 (+53.1%) is also strong but drops one spot on October to #2. The new BMW i4 is up 12 ranks on last month to a record #3 and 5% share above the BMW iX (+886.6%) at #4. Here too the remainder of the Top 10 grows faster than the market with the Volvo C40 (+7257.1%) celebrating one year of sales in the country and the Toyota Yaris Cross (+601%), Volvo XC40 (+122.4%), VW ID.3 (+108.9%), Audi e-Tron (+53.2%) and Skoda Enyaq (+42.2%) all delivering splendid gains.
