India October 2022: Maruti Suzuki Alto repeats at #1, market up 29.3%

The Indian new wholesales car market soars 29.3% year-on-year in October to 336,229 units, bringing the year-to-date tally up 23.7% or over 600,000 units to 3,186,798. Maruti Suzuki (+28.8%) virtually matches the market to hold a commanding 41.7% share, level with its YTD figure (41.8%). Hyundai (+29.7%) also evolves roughly like the market to 14.3% share vs. 14.6% so far this year. Tata (+33.3%) accelerates a little faster at #3 ahead of Mahindra (+60.9%) and Kia (+42.8%) both in outstanding shape. Below, MG (+52.5%) and Citroen (+1767.2%) stand out.

Model-wise, the Maruti Suzuki Alto (+22.3%) repeats at #1 thanks to the new generation, the last time it had back to back wins was in September and October 2021. The Alto advances to the 5th place year-to-date as a result. Leader year-to-date, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R (+45.5%) remains in 2nd place above the Maruti Suzuki Swift up 87.7% year-on-year and six spots on last month to #3. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno (+10.1%) is down one rank on September to #4. The Tata Nexon (+36.4%) continues to outrace the market and lands in 5th place like last month. The Hyundai Creta (+84%), Maruti Suzuki DZire (+52.5%) and Tata Punch (+29.9%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10. Further down, the new Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is up Grand Vitara up 68.8% and 11 ranks on its inaugural month to #16 with over 8,000 wholesales. Its twin the Toyota Hyryder is up 17 to #34.
