It’s a second consecutive month of double-digit gains for Irish new car sales: after soaring +36.6% in August, the market is up an even more impressive 42.3% in September to 6,330 registrations. This leads to a year-to-date volume virtually stable at -0.1% to 101,480. The entire podium beats the market, with Volkswagen (+89.7%) scoring a third straight month at #1. It is followed by Kia (+123%) and Tesla (+241.6%) up 20 spots on last month to #3. Mercedes (+87.8%), Audi (+52.7%) and Skoda (+49.3%) also post very strong gains in the remainder of the Top 10 whereas Ford (+33.4%) isn’t quite at the market growth rate and Toyota (-29%), BMW (-23%) and Hyundai (+6.9%) underperform. Cupra (+375%), Mazda (+263.6%), Dacia (+226.8%) and Volvo (+163.6%) shine below.

Model-wise, the Tesla Model 3 (+184.3%) completes its end-of-quarter month of backloading, albeit with a tremendous improvement on September 2021. In fact, all Top 8 models at least double their sales year-on-year. The Hyundai Kona (+825%) is the most impressive, followed by the VW T-Roc (+607.4%), the Renault Captur (+551.9%), VW ID.4 (+361.4%), Kia Sportage (+226%), Kia Niro (+151.7%) and Ford Kuga (+109.6%). Still #1 year-to-date, the Hyundai Tucson (-52.1%) is in complete freefall at #10. Similarly the Toyota Corolla (-55.3%), #2 year-to-date, is down to #26 for the month. The Tesla Model Y (#15) is the best-selling recent launch above the Cupra Born (#30) and Dacia Jogger (#38).
