Portugal August 2022: Renault Captur and Peugeot 208 lead market soaring 42.4%

The Renault Captur is the best-selling vehicle in Portugal in August.

New car sales in Portugal rally back up 42.4% year-on-year in August to 11,349 registrations, levelling the year-to-date tally at 101,293 (-0.4%). Peugeot (+107.6%) more than doubles its sales year-on-year to hold onto the brands pole position however at 9.9% its market share remains well below the 11.3% it commands YTD (11.3%). Renault (+71.1%) gains seven spots on July to land at #2, a ranking it now also holds year-to-date. Mercedes (+41%) almost matches the market growth at #4 while Fiat (+198.7%) and Ford (+162.3%) both post extravagant gains in the remainder of the Top 10. A Top 10 with only Kia (+47.6%) as the additional market-beater. Below, notice Citroen (+73.8%) up drastically year-on-year but down 9 ranks on July to #12, Alfa Romeo (+416.7%), Cupra (+337%), Opel (+155.3%), Honda (+140%), Jeep (+109.8%) and Skoda (+71.3%) all in outstanding shape.

Model-wise, the Renault Captur (+146.8%) takes the lead with 6.5% share vs. 3.3% so far this year, it is followed by the Peugeot 208 (+725.7%) and Fiat 500 (+247.2%) completing a euphoric podium. Below the Dacia Sandero (-2.3%), #1 a year ago, the rest of the Top 10 all outpace the market with the Ford Kuga (+1100%) the most impressive followed by the Peugeot 308 (+410%), Nissan Qashqai (+182.7%), Ford Puma (+134.9%), Toyota Yaris (+64.7%) and BMW 1 Series (+46.1%). The Toyota Yaris Cross is the most popular recent launch at #27 ahead of the VW Taigo (#30), Cupra Born (#54) and BMW iX (#59).
