Slovakia May 2022: Skoda back to #1, Hyundai i30 ultra dominant in market down -17.3%
The Hyundai i30 holds 8.1% of the Slovak market in May, a new record.
New car sales in Slovakia see their fall accelerate to -17.3% year-on-year in May to 6,650 units, yet thanks to a strong start of the year, the year-to-date tally is in positive at +5.6% to 31,929 units. After being toppled by Hyundai for the first time in history last month, Skoda (-38.6%) reclaims the brands top spot with 16.2% share and despite a devastating year-on-year loss. Hyundai (+18.8%) continues to go all guns blazing with a very strong gain to 14.9% share vs. 13% so far this year. The Top 5 is unchanged on last month and year-to-date with Kia (+0.3%) and Toyota (+17.1%) shining and Volkswagen (-11.8%) in negative but less than the market. The remainder of the Top 10 is down, with BMW (-13.8%) and Dacia (-18%) resisting best but Mercedes (-25.2%), Opel (-27.3%) and Peugeot (-33.8%) losing share year-on-year. Below, DS (+216.7%), Cupra (+214.3%), Ssangyong (+122.2%), Seat (+96.4%) and Land Rover (+37.8%) impress with hefty gains.
Model-wise, the Hyundai i30 easily tops the ranking with 8.1% of the market, marking a fourth consecutive monthly win and a new record share. In fact the Top 5 is unchanged on last month with the Kia Ceed (5.8%), Skoda Fabia (3.6%), Kia Sportage (3.4%) and Hyundai Tucson (2.9%) in tow. The Toyota RAV4 surges 13 spots on April to land at #6, now also its YTD ranking. The Skoda Kamiq is up 7 ranks to #7 vs. #9 YTD, the Skoda Superb is up 3 spots to #8 vs. #15 YTD while the Skoda Scala and Toyota Corolla close out the Top 10 but all drop down the ladder compared to last month. Notice also the Skoda Octavia back up 16 ranks to #13 vs. #7 year-to-date and #3 over the Full Year 2021, the Peugeot 208 up 18 to #18. Among recent launches, the VW Taigo ranks #26 (+6) and the Toyota Yaris Cross is at #27 (-5).
