Portugal March 2022: Peugeot 208 and Citroen C3 lead market up 5.3%

The Peugeot 208 is the best-selling car in Portugal for the first time since February 2021.

New car sales in Portugal grow 5.3% year-on-year to 13,371 registrations, leading to a year-to-date volume up 12% to 34,771. Peugeot (-21.2%) remains the most popular carmaker in the country by a large margin but drops from a particularly high year-ago basis when it monopolised the podium. Mercedes (-20.5%) is in a similar situation in 2nd place while BMW is stable and overtakes Toyota (+32.1%) vs. last month even though Toyota is in great shape year-on-year. Citroen (-9.4%) and Renault (-30.2%) can’t capitalise on the market growth whereas Dacia (+139.1%), Hyundai (+83.8%), Kia (+46.6%) and to a lesser extent Seat (+13.7%) all post impressive gains in the remainder of the Top 10.

Over in the models ranking, the Peugeot 208 (+18.9%) signs its first monthly win since February 2021, distancing the Citroen C3 (+96.7%) very impressive in 2nd place. The Renault Clio (+2.4%) is back up 17 spots on February but can’t keep the pace with the year-on-year market growth. Below, we find outstanding progressions by the Dacia Duster (+168.7%) and Fiat 500 (+116.5%) up 41 and 27 ranks on last month respectively. The Seat Arona (+40.6%), Dacia Sandero (+39.4%), Seat Ibiza (+31%) and Volvo XC40 (+23.2%) also make waves in the remainder of the Top 10. Just outside, the Tesla Model Y is up 45 spots on February to land at #11, the best-selling recent launch in the country. It is followed by the Toyota Yaris Cross (#21), BMW i4 (#24) impressive at this level, the Opel Mokka (#27) and Dacia Jogger (#36) new for the month.
