Mexico February 2022: Chevrolet Aveo snaps lead, MG (+463.7%) breaks records in market sliding -3.3%

The Chevrolet Aveo is the best-selling vehicle in Mexico in February.

New light vehicle sales in Mexico are down -3.3% year-on-year in February to 79,600, however keep in mind February 2021 was down -21.1% on the year prior. The year-to-date talky after two months stands at 158,185, also down -3.3% on the same period in 2021. Nissan (-15.8%) falls almost five times as fast as the market but comfortably retains the top spot with 19% share. It is followed by Chevrolet (+3.3%) which has now recovered from the microchip shortage, and Volkswagen (-17.9%) in difficulty year-on-year but up two spots on January to #3. Kia (+9.7%) remains in 4th place while Toyota (-3.4%) is down two ranks to #5. Mazda (-5.5%) stays at #6 above Hyundai (+34.3%) scoring the largest gain in the Top 9. Below Ford (+8.9%) and Suzuki (+2.3%), MG (+463.7%) is the performer of the month, sliding into the Top 10 with a record 3,044 sales and 3.8% share. Below, JAC (+151.7%), Mitsubishi (+54.9%), Dodge (+53.8%), Lincoln (+38%), Subaru (+30.2%), Isuzu (+30%), Acura (+25%) and Volvo (+24.9%) make themselves noticed with splendid gains.

Model-wise, we have yet a new leader this month with the Chevrolet Aveo (+125.3%) snapping the top spot both in February and year-to-date. This is the first time the Aveo tops the Mexican market since September 2019. Leader over the Full Year 2021, the Nissan Versa (-21.8%) rallies back up five spots on last month to a more fitting 2nd place but only ranks #5 in the year-to-date charts. The Kia Rio (+58.7%) is down one rank on January to #3, distancing the Nissan Pickup (-23.3%) and last month’s leader the Nissan March (-14.8%) both in difficulty. The Toyota Hilux (+67.4%), Chevrolet Tracker (+85.7%), Hyundai Grand i10 (+36.5%) and Hyundai Creta (+130.6%) all post fantastic year-on-year upticks in the remainder of the Top 10. Looking at the Top 20, the MG 5 (+389%), VW T-Cross (+151.7%), MG ZS (+680.4%) and Mazda CX-30 (+79%) impress also. The Dodge Journey is up 52 spots on January to take the lead of recent launches (<12 months) at #25 ahead of the Toyota Raize (#27), Chevrolet Captiva (#31) and Chevrolet Tornado Van (#38).
