South Africa January 2022: Market up 19.5%, Haval 5th best-selling brand and Jolion in Top 10
The Jolion helps Haval hit an impressive 5th place in January.
According to figures released by Naamsa, the South African new light vehicle market is up a very satisfying 19.5% year-on-year in January to 41,382 units. Passenger Vehicles are up 26.6% to 30,037 while Light Commercials show a more timid uptick at +3.8% to 9,629 units. However exports are down -9.3% to 19,089. Toyota remains by far the most popular carmaker in the country with 30.2% share, distancing the VW Group at 13% and Suzuki at 7.8%, surpassing 3,000 monthly units for only the second time ever. Hyundai places at #4 with 6.4% but the surprise of the month is Haval up to a fantastic 5th place with 5.9% share. Model-wise, below an ever dominant Toyota Hilux at 6.8% share, the Toyota Starlet (a Suzuki Baleno rebadge) shoots up to 2nd place with 3.6% share, one percentage point above its FY2021 level and knocking the VW Polo down to #3. The Toyota Urban Cruiser (aka Suzuki Vitara Brezza) is up to an impressive 4th place while the Toyota Corolla Cross is up to #6. The Haval Jolion cracks the Top 10 at #10 vs. #22 over the Full Year 2021.
