Mexico January 2022: Nissan March signs first ever win in market edging down -3.2%

The Nissan March is the best-selling vehicle in Mexico for the first time.

The Mexican new vehicle market is down -3.2% year-on-year in January to 78,585 registrations, keeping in mind January 2021 was already down -22.5% on the year prior. Nissan (-20.9%) easily holds onto the brands top spot but falls much faster than the market to a weak 17.8% share vs. 20.1% over the Full Year 2021. Chevrolet by contrast (-1.5%) limits its fall to half of that of the market to reach 14% share, its highest since April 2021 and to be compared with 11.7% over FY2021. Toyota (+8.9%) is very solid in third place with 10.9% of the market vs. 9% over FY2021 just as Kia (+9.8%) breaks its all-time share record at 9.4%. Ford (+12.2%), Hyundai (+6.5%) and Suzuki (+6.1%) are the additional gainers in the Top 10 while Honda (-3%) matches the market and Mazda (-7.8%) disappoints but gains one rank on December to #6.

Over in the models ranking, we have a completely reshuffled order due in part to the dismal performance of the traditional leader the Nissan Versa (-68.4%) down to a paltry 7th place for the month. Strikingly, the Top 4 models all lodge double-digit gains, an exceptional performance in the current negative context. The Nissan March (+29.6%) snaps what is believed to be the nameplate’s first ever monthly win with 5.8% share vs. #5 and 3.4% share over FY2021. The Kia Rio (+38%) leaps up four spots on last month to a  best-ever #2 while the Chevrolet Aveo (+55.7%) is down one to #3. The Toyota Hilux (+33.1%) is up a further three ranks on December to #4, also believed to be the highest ever ranking reached by the model and most importantly pushing it to the top of the pickup charts just above the Nissan Pickup (-37.7%). The Nissan Sentra (+16.8%) is also very solid at #6 while the VW Virtus (+48.2%) secures its first ever Mexican Top 10 finish at #10. The Chevrolet Groove (#15) aka Baojun 510 is the best-selling recent launch again this month, distancing the Toyota Raize (#22) and Chevrolet Captiva (#24) aka Baojun 530.
