Vietnam September 2021: VinFast (-5.1%) defies market down -46.1%
The VinFast Lux A2.0 is inside the Vietnamese Top 10 for the 2nd time in the past 3 months.
According to figures released by VAMA, the Vietnamese new vehicle market crumbles down -50.3% year-on-year in September to just 13.537 units, leading to a year-to-date volume up +5.5% to 188.937. These figures climb to 21.113 (-46.1%) and 258.791 (+7.8%) respectively once adding Hyundai and VinFast who report sales separately. Vietnam is in the midst of its most severe wave of Covid-19 with many factories and dealerships closed. Hyundai (-50.4%) reclaims the top of the manufacturers ranking both for the month at 19.3% share and year-to-date at 17.1%, toppling Thaco-Kia (-37.9%). VinFast (-5.1%) only edges down to post a fantastic 16.6% share vs. 9.9% so far this year and a record 17.3% last month. The rest of the Top 10 all fall faster than the market, with Mitsubishi (-70.8%), Mazda (-68.5%), Honda (-64.7%) and Suzuki (-59.1%) hit the hardest and Isuzu (-55.2%), Toyota (-53.8%) and Ford (-48%) also struggling. Lexus (+29%) posts the only gain in market with Hino (-9.4%) and Peugeot (-20.3%) resisting well in context.
Model-wise, the VinFast Fadil (+69.3%) lodges a 5th consecutive monthly win at 12.1% share and cements its year-to-date domination with 6.8% of the market so far this year. The Hyundai Accent (-23.4%) returns to the 2nd spot it now also holds year-to-date, while the Kia Seltos (-4%) rounds out the podium like last month. The Ford Ranger (-22.8%) and Toyota Corolla Cross (-20.6%) hold up well to close the Top 5 whereas the Toyota Vios (-76.2%) falls apart and drops to #3 year-to-date below the Hyundai Accent. The VinFast Lux A2.0 (-39.6%) scores a second Top 10 finish in the past three months at #10.
