Switzerland June 2021: Tesla Model 3 runaway leader in market up 6.2%
The Tesla Model 3 is #1 in Switzerland for the 7th time.
The Swiss new car market is up 6.2% year-on-year in June to 26.005 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 20.7% to 124.547. 4×4 sales trail the market both this month at +0.4% to 11.962 and 46% share vs. 48.7% a year ago and also year-to-date at +11.3% to 59.119 and 47.5% share vs. 51.5% over the same period in 2020. Petrol sales drop -18.9% to 11.202 and 43.1% share vs. 56.4% a year ago while diesel sinks -32.9% to 3.500 and 13.5% share vs. 21.3%. In contrast, HEV is up 78.5% to 5.288 and 20.3% share vs. 12.1% last year, BEV surges 173.9% to 3.690 and 14.2% share vs. 5.5% a year ago and PHEV is up 112.8% to 2.286 and 8.8% share vs. 4.4%. All in all, alternatively fuelled vehicles hold a 43.5% share of the Swiss market in June, up from 22.3% a year ago.
Volkswagen (+21.7%) more than triples the market growth rate for the month to cement its leadership at 13.3% share vs. 11% year-to-date. It is followed this month by BMW (+9.3%) also outpacing the market. Mercedes (-11.3%) drops significantly at #3 but remains #2 year-to-date for now. Audi (+25.9%) is the largest gainer in the Top 5 while Skoda (-12.8%) is down 3 spots on May to #5 overall. Below Seat (+25%) also in outstanding shape, Tesla (+165.2%) shoots up 19 ranks on last month to land at #7, its highest ranking yet this year. No other Top 10 brand manages to beat the market, with Toyota (+3.1%) a little shy and both Renault (-22.4%) and Ford (-19.6%) in difficulty. Below, Honda (+74.7%), Peugeot (+52.7%) and Mazda (+52.4%) impress. Chinese DFSK (Dongfeng Sokon) sells the first unit of its Seres 3 EV in Switzerland this month.
Over in the models ranking, we have a clear leader in June: the Tesla Model 3 (+238.6%) more than triples its sales year-on-year to hit a splendid 5% share thanks to almost 1.300 registrations. This is the 7th time the Model 3 tops the Swiss charts after March and December 2019, March, August, September and December 2020. This month’s performance propels the Model 3 from #27 to #4 year-to-date. The VW Tiguan (+11.2%) is up four spots on May to #2 while last month’s and year-to-date leader the Skoda Octavia (-24.2%) is down to #3. These two nameplates are the only additional ones managing 2% share or more as Switzerland is the most fragmented market in the world. Outstanding performances by the VW Polo (+121.9%), BMW 1 Series (+69.6%), Dacia Sandero (+57.4%) and Fiat 500 (+56%) in the remainder of the Top 10. The VW ID.3 (#21) is the best-selling recent launch above the VW ID.4 (#33), Cupra Formentor (#47) and Skoda Enyaq (#57).
