Sweden June 2021: MG ZS shoots up to #2 in market up 45.9%

The MG ZS is the second best-selling vehicle in Sweden in June.

New car sales in Sweden surge 45.9% year-on-year in June to 36.095 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 37.8% to 173.163 units. We are now back above pre-pandemic levels with June 2020 volumes up 13.4% on June 2019 and year-to-date up 3.1% on the same period in 2019. EV sales soar 411.9% in June to 8.687 and 24.1% share while PHEVs are up 94.8% to 9.142 and 25.3% share. Keep in mind that on April 1, the Swedish government reduced the bonus for PHEVs and increased the bonus for EVs. In total, the share of rechargeable cars is 49.4% in June vs. 25.8% in June 2020 and 39.9% year-to-date.

Volvo’s supremacy at home is challenged by Volkswagen (+55.1%), the best-selling brand for the third month in a row at 14.9% share whereas Volvo is down -9.2% to 14.7%. The Swedish carmaker however easily retains the year-to-date top spot at 18.4% share vs. 13.1% for VW. Kia (+76.7%), Toyota (+158.4%) and Skoda (+54.8%) also outpace the market to round out the Top 5. Newcomer MG is up 28 spots on May to land at a fantastic 7th place with 4.7% thanks to the immediate success of the ZS EV as we’ll see further down. Tesla (+221.7%) lodges the largest gain in the Top 10, up 12 ranks on last month to #10 while further down Polestar (+3133.3%), Hyundai (+118.7%) and Subaru (+115.7%) also impress. Among other newcomers, Cupra is up two spots on May to #26 and Lynk & Co up one to #28.

Many changes atop the models ranking. The Volvo S/V60 (-17.7%) is up 9 ranks on May to reclaim the top spot it holds year-to-date but remains weak at 4.9% and a market-defying double-digit loss. The surprise of the month comes in 2nd place with the MG ZS holding a splendid 4.6% share for its first full month of sales, an even stronger performance than in neighbouring Norway, the kingdom of EVs. It looks like the ZS, as one of the cheapest EVs around, has found its customer base in Sweden. The Volvo XC60 (+17.1%), leader last month, is down to #3 in June ahead of the Tesla Model 3 (+380.4%) up 27 spots to #4. Another solid month for the VW ID.4 up one rank to #5. The Toyota Corolla (+423.7%), Kia Ceed (+166.9%) and Niro (+87.3%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10. Notice also the Lynk & Co 01 up 32 ranks to #56 and the Ford Mustang Mach-E landing at #59.
