The Russian new car market endures a second consecutive year in negative in 2020 but manages to keep its covid-related loss into the single digits at -9.1% to 1.598.825 sales, the lowest annual tally since 2017. Homegrown leader Lada (-5.2%) once again does better than the market to improve its share from 20.6% to 21.5%, its highest level since 2011 (21.8%) after hitting an all-time low of 15.5% in 2014. In a Top 5 brands unchanged on 2019, Volkswagen (-4%) and Hyundai (-8.7%) are above the market while Kia (-10.7%) and Renault (-11.4%) can’t quite catch up. Skoda (+6.8%) and BMW (+2.9%) are the only year-on-year gainers in the Top 10 and both advance one spot to #6 and #10 respectively.

Haval is up to #16 in Russia, the highest annual ranking for a Chinese carmaker.

The success story of the year is the growth of Chinese carmakers, as a whole up 41.3% to 57.200 sales and 3.6% share vs. 2.3% a year ago. While still a relatively low share – equivalent to Nissan this year – this type of progression in the current deflated context is worth noticing. Haval (+41.5%) leads the charge for the second year in a row and climbs 4 spots to #16, equalling the highest ever annual ranking held by a Chinese brand in Russia, also hit by Chery in 2007. Geely (+61.2%) does even better and also advances four spots to #17, becoming only the 4th Chinese brand to ever break into the annual Russian Top 20 alongside Chery, Haval and Lifan at #19 in 2016 and 2017 and #20 in 2018. Chery (+80.1%) soars 6 spots to #21, Changan (+153.2%) is up 8 to #25 and FAW (+77.2%) up 9 to #32. 2020 saw the launch of the Cheryexeed brand, simply called Exeed at home, landing at #49 after two months of sales.

The Toyota RAV4 sports the largest gain in the Top 25.

Over in the models ranking, the Lada Granta (-7.2%) repeats at #1 and improves to 7.9% share, lodging its 5th annual win overall. The Lada Vesta (-3.7%) advances to 6.7% share but remains in 2nd place, meaning holds the Top 2 spots at home for the third year running but only the 4th time since 2012. The Kia Rio (-4.8%) also outpaces the market at #4 while the Hyundai Creta (+2.9%) is actually up and remains the best-selling SUV in Russia for the 4th consecutive year. Helped by a new generation, the VW Polo is up 4.2% and one spot to #5 overall for 2020. The Toyota RAV4 (+19%) sports the only remaining gain in the Top 25 and leaps 7 spots to #8 and #2 SUV. By far the most popular launch of 2020, the Skoda Rapid PA II lands at #15 and peaked at #6 in July. Three additional new launches made it into the monthly Top 25 this year: the Kia K5 peaking at #17 in November, the Skoda Karoq peaking at #14 in April and the Kia Seltos hitting #20 in May.
