Germany November 2020: Sales resist at -3%, Renault (+29.2%), Opel (+17.1%) shine

The Opel Corsa 3peats at #2 in Germany.

Given the return of various restrictions linked to a second wave of coronavirus, the German new car market resists particularly well in November at just -3% year-on-year to 290.150 units, leading to a year-to-date tally off -21.6% to 2.606.284. Brand leader Volkswagen (-18.4%) isn’t benefiting from the market resistance at all, but remains at an unassailable 17.6% share. Mercedes (+0.5%) and Audi (+3.1%) are the only gainers in the Top 5 while Renault (+29.2%) and Opel (+17.1%) posts the largest upticks in the Top 10. Below, Tesla (+500%), Lamborghini (+169.6%), Ferrari (+130.8%), Fiat (+42.7%), Toyota (+33.1%) and Citroen (+28.6%) make themselves noticed. Newcomer Cupra remains inside the Top 30 at #29.

Model-wise, the VW Golf (-47.6%) endures another catastrophic month but remains the best-seller overall with 3.6% share vs. 4.7% so far this year. The Opel Corsa (+33.6%) brilliantly 3peats at #2 thanks partly to its EV variant that represents 21.6% of its November volume. The VW Passat (+10%), T-Roc (+28.9%) and Ford Focus (+90.4%) also all post fantastic gains just below, while the Skoda Octavia (+30.5%) and Mercedes A-Class (+15%) are the only additional gainers in the Top 10 just as the VW Tiguan (-40.1%) implodes.

The Hyundai Kona (+175%) is lifted to a record 11th place by its EV variant accounting for 54.4% of its November volume. After a record-breaking 7th place last month, the Renault Zoe (+1235.5%!) falls to a still very impressive 12th place, with a fleet ratio of only 39.1% vs. a market average of 60.5% meaning it is lifted mainly by private sales. The VW Up (+62.1%) is up 10 spots on October to #14 thanks to its EV variant that accounts for 40.6% of its volume for the month. Finally, the VW ID.3 is down 9 spots on last month to #37.
