The Chevrolet Onix Plus breaks its volume record in Brazil this month.
New light vehicle sales manage to contain their loss to single digits for the first time since the pandemic hit in November at -7.2% to 214.265 units, the second month in a row above 200.000 sales. The year-to-date tally is now down -28.6% to 1.718.093. We are amending our 2020 forecast up from 1.92 million (-28%) last month to 1.96 million (-26%) now. Fiat (+20.8%) continues to vastly outpace the Brazilian market, seizing a third consecutive win and third win in the past 5 years but this month Chevrolet (-5.2%) rallies back to us just 237 sales less and reclaims the YTD top spot off Volkswagen (-7.9%). In 8th place, Jeep (+10.9%) breaks its volume record at 12.708 units while Volvo (+37%), Chery (+18.5%), Hyundai (+10.3%) and BMW (+2.1%) are also up.
Over in the models ranking, Chevrolet reclaims control with the Onix (-25.5%) in pole position albeit in difficulty and the Onix Plus (+50%) surging to its first ever time above 10.000 monthly units in Brazil at 12.135. The Fiat Strada (+49.9%) continues to be pushed by the new generation but slides one spot down on last month to #3. The Chevrolet Tracker (+458.9%) also gets a new generation boost but drops two spots to #10. In fact the entire Top 10 is in positive bar the Ford Ka (-16.1%), with the VW Gol (+27.8%) and Hyundai HB20 (+17.6%) being the most dynamic. The new VW Nivus seems to have already found its cruise level, remaining at #23 with an almost identical volume for the past 3 months. It easily leads new models above the Nissan V-Drive (#56) and the Ford Territory (#75) imported from China.
