Hong Kong (China) August 2020: Tesla scores first win, holds 25.7% share, overall sales up 9%
Both Tesla and the Model 3 are #1 in Hong Kong for the first time in history.
New light vehicle sales in Hong Kong enjoy their first post-pandemic year-on-year gain in August at +9% to 3.550 registrations, leading to a year-to-date tally down -18.1% to 18.535. Helped by a particularly voluptuous batch of China-made Model 3 finding their way into the Hong Kong port, Tesla is the best-selling marque in Hong Kong in August and for the first time in history, eclipsing a previous best of #2 hit in September 2019 and March 2020. Tesla sells 912 units in August vs. just 3 in August 2019, and we can expect the US brand to remain at the helm of Hong Kong charts in September which is traditionally a strong month for Tesla as Elon Musk tries to shove as many models as possible to spin good quarterly results. The Model 3 accounts for the overwhelming majority of Tesla’s August volume and is therefore the best-selling vehicle in the Territory for the month – and for the first time also. In other news, Porsche (+116.3%), Honda (+56.9%), Suzuki (+26.6%) and Lexus (+19.6%) all post fantastic results in the remainder of the Top 10.
Previous month: Hong Kong (China) July 2020: Subaru, Honda, Lexus can’t prevent another sales drop (-9.3%)
One year ago: Hong Kong (China) August 2019: Nissan and Kia resist in market down -16.2%
