Iran June 2020: Saipa Tiba and Peugeot 206 top resurgent market (+65.6%)

The Saipa Tiba sells almost 15.700 units in June in Iran…

28/07 update: Now with production data.

A very rare occurrence, we can share with you today sales data (and not production) for Iran, showing a spectacular post-pandemic recovery. Note the set of manufacturers that shares sales data excludes Bahman, Kerman Khodro and imports. Yes this dataset still represents between 90 and 95% of the national market as most Chinese carmakers have left the country after the strengthening of international sanctions in 2018-2019 and imports have slowed down to just a trickle. Note the First Half of 2020 roughly corresponds to the Dey 1398 – Khordad 1399 period in the Iranian calendar. April 2020 is roughly equivalent to Farvardin 1399, May 2020 to Ordibehesht 1399 and June 2020 to Khordad 1399.

…when adding Saipa Saina sales.

After falling to 24.593 units in April, the Iranian new car market soars 56.7% year-on-year in May to 56.312 and 65.6% in June to 82.208. The H1 2020 tally stands at an encouraging 390.546 units. Peugeot (+104.1%) more than doubles its sales year-on-year in Iran to snap the brands top spot off Saipa (+61.6%) with Iran Khodro (+46.2%), Zamyad (+12%) and Brilliance (+1226.3%) rounding out the Top 5. Renault (-94%) and Dongfeng (-97.8%) are disappearing while Haima (-7.5%) adds up to 4.202 units year-to-date. Chinese carmakers are down -26% in June and account for 2.1% of the H1 2020 market. Production data shows May volumes up 24.8% year-on-year to 85.060 and June up 28% to 81.944, leading to a H1 2020 tally up 25.8% to 437.564. This time, Saipa (+17.2%) is in the lead in June above Peugeot (+38%), Iran Khodro (+69.8%) and Zamyad (+28.7%).

The Peugeot 206 is estimated to come in at a close 2nd place.

Our models sales estimates show that in June the Saipa Tiba/Saina (+198.4%) is up 3-fold on June 2019 to take the lead of the Iranian sales charts with just under 15.700 sales, distancing the Peugeot 206 (+114.3%) also in outstanding shape at almost 14.900 units. Saipa doesn’t separate Tiba and Saina sales but given my observations in Iran in 2018 the Tiba should account for the overwhelming majority of this figure. The Saipa Pride (-5.5%) disappoints in third place but keeps the YTD lead with 76.000 units. The Peugeot 405 and Pars round out the Top 5 ahead of the Iran Khodro Samand and Zamyad Z24. The new Saipa Quick has established itself inside the Top 10 at #9 both in June and YTD. The Brilliance H300 is estimated to crack the June Top 10 but ranks #16 so far in 2020.
