Norway March 2020: e-Tron lifts Audi to first brands crown, electrified sales up to record 82.2% in market down -32.2%
1 in 7 new cars sold in Norway in March is an Audi e-Tron.
On March 12, Norway imposed a two-week national lockdown to stem the spread of COVID-19. As a result new car sales in the country plunge -32.2% year-on-year in March to 12.451 units, pulling the year-to-date tally down -15.9% to 32.358. Zero-emission cars (EVs) are down -35.1% to 6.966 and 55.9% share vs. 58.4% in March 2019 and hybrid sales are down -5.6% to 3.276 and 26.3% share vs. 18.9% a year ago, including 2.392 PHEVs (+17.5%). This means the share of electrified vehicles in Norway in February is 82.2%, a new record eclipsing the 79.2% of last month and 78.5% of January, to be compared with 77.3% a year ago in March 2019, which at the time was a record. In contrast, petrol cars hold 10% of the market vs. 10.4% in March 2019 and diesel cars are at 7.7% share vs. 12.3% a year ago.
The staggering success of the e-Tron (see further down) lifts Audi up a smashing 117.2% year-on-year to its first ever monthly brands crown in Norway with 14.3% share, topping stablemate Volkswagen (-9.6%) off its pedestal. Even better: this month’s result also pushes Audi to #1 brand in Norway over Q1 2020. Tesla (-80.6%) gets its usual end-of-quarter push but this time it pales in comparison with all-time record scores a year ago. Skoda (+54.3%) manages to post a fantastic gain in a challenging environment, as does Mercedes (+70.5%) in the remainder of the Top 10. Further down, DS (+737.5%), Seat (+588.9%), Porsche (+293.5%), Peugeot (+44.6%) and Mini (+30.8%) stand out while newcomer MG is up 6 spots on February to #16, its highest ranking so far.
Model-wise, the Audi e-Tron (+147.2%) doubles down on a record February volume (1.171) and share (11.3%) to break both in March at 1.681 and 13.5%. Over Q1 2020, the e-Tron sold almost double the #2 VW Golf at 3.754 vs. 1.959. The Tesla Model 3 (-81.2%) rallies back up 43 spots on last month to #2 with 8%, distancing the VW Golf (-29.7%), Hyundai Kona (+55%) and Nissan Leaf (-16.2%). The Peugeot 208 (+1225%) is lifted by the new EV variant, while the VW Up (+312.5%) also gets a boost by a revamped e-Up model. The Mercedes EQC is up 33 spots on February to break into the Norwegian Top 20 for the first time at #19, becoming the most popular recent launch above the MG ZS (#21) and Porsche Taycan (#35), also breaking their ranking records.
