Turkey Full Year 2019: Fiat Egea (+51.2%) annihilates market down another -22.9%, losing half its volume in 2 years

The Fiat Egea holds 11.6% of the Turkish market in 2019 vs. 13.6% for the entire Renault lineup.

After losing -35.1% in 2018, Turkish new light vehicle sales continue to sink in 2019 at -22.9% to 478.960 units, the lowest annual volume and first time below the half-million mark since 2009. This means that in just two years since the 956.000 units of 2017, the new light vehicle market in Turkey has lost exactly half its annual volume. However the rot seems to have been stopped with monthly sales bouncing back up spectacularly in September (+82.3%), October (+127.5%) and to a lesser extent December (+16.5%). Diesel remains the most popular fuel with 201.487 sales and 52% share, followed by petrol at 155.042 and 40%, GPL at 4.8%, hybrid at 3.1% and EVs with just 222 units and 0.06% of the market.

Supported by extravagant fleet sales of the Egea sedan as we’ll see further down, Fiat (+8.8%) stuns with the only year-on-year gain among the 22 best-selling brands and overtakes Renault (-24.3%) to take control of the brands ranking at 15.9% share vs. just 13.6% for the French carmaker. Volkswagen (-27.4%) and Ford (-28%) camp on their 2018 positions while Peugeot (-4.3%) limits its fall and gains two spots to round out the Top 5 ahead of Toyota (-28.5%), Hyundai (-28.7%), Honda (-29%) and Dacia (-33.1%). Only Opel (-13.8%) manages to outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10. Below, Lexus (+51.8%), Smart (+25.7%), Alfa Romeo (+24.6%), DS (+14%), Aston Martin (+12.5%), Ferrari (+11.1%), Jaguar (+10.9%) and Land Rover (+9.9%) stand out, although none manages more than 0.3% share.

Model-wise, the Fiat Egea (+51.2%) evolves in a different dimension, almost doubling its market share from 5.9% in 2018 to 11.6% this year, peaking at 13% in March, 12.4% in April, 12.9% in May and a new record 14.2% in December, which most of the time is higher than any other brand in the Turkish market, let alone model. The Fiat Egea has now led the annual Turkish sales for the past 4 years, which marks the 6th win by a Fiat nameplate in the past 8 years (add the Fiat Linea in 2012 and 2013). The Renault Clio (+9.2%) overtakes the Renault Megane (-26.3%) to take the 2nd spot overall, with the Toyota Corolla (-18.8%), Honda Civic (-28.5%), Ford Transit/Tourneo Courier (-17.7%) and VW Passat (-29.2%) in tow. The Peugeot 3008 (+39.6%) is the best-selling SUV in the country for the first time, leaping from #22 in 2018 to #9 this year and distancing the Dacia Duster (-19.8%), Nissan Qashqai (-37.7%) and Hyundai Tucson (+33.3%) up 14 spots to #13.
