Finland September 2019: Toyota Corolla 3peats at #1, Tesla Model 3 up to #13 in market up 29.8%

The Toyota Corolla is #1 in Finland for the 3rd straight month.

The Finnish new car market manages its first year-on-year gain in over a year in September at +29.8% to 8.372 units, unfortunately this is only due to a weak post-WLTP comparison base in September 2018, with this month’s sales actually down -7.1% on September 2017, a more realistic benchmark. Year-to-date, Finland is now down -10.3% to 86.431. Toyota (+19.8%) can’t quite match the frenetic market growth rate but easily remains in the brands lead at 15.2% share vs. 10.2% for Skoda (+34.7%), also back to #2 YTD above Volkswagen (+73.4%) despite the latter posting the largest gain in the Top 7. Opel (+88.6%), Ford (+43.5%) and Hyundai (+35.3%) also outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10 whereas Kia (+21.3%), Mercedes (+19.2%), Nissan (+17%) and Volvo (+5.5%) fall below. Further down, Tesla (+875%), Dacia (+173.5%), Mitsubishi (+167.2%) and Lexus (+137.5%) impress the most.

In the models ranking, the Toyota Corolla (+1832.3%) 3peats at #1 and lodges its 4th win in the past 5 months to advance to #2 YTD below the Skoda Octavia (+52.1%) up one spot on August to #2 this month. The VW Golf (+169.5%) rounds up the podium above the Nissan Qashqai (+23.2%) and Toyota Yaris (+15.6%) both underperforming. The rest of the Top 10 models all outpace the market, led by the Opel Astra (+140.9%), Ford Focus (+123.5%), Toyota RAV4 (+61.6%), Ford Fiesta (+51.9%) and Volvo XC60 (+38.6%). The Tesla Model 3 is estimated to climb to #13 this month, its highest ranking in Finland so far. Notice also the Mercedes A-Class (+176.4%) storming back inside the YTD Top 20 at #18.
