China New Energy August 2019: Baojun (+460.6%), GAC NE (+89.9%) up, BYD (-70.3%) down in 2nd straight market loss (-7.1%)

The GAC NE Aion S is among the 10 best-selling New Energy vehicles in China for the first time.

Confirming wholesales results (-15.8%), Chinese retail sales of New Energy vehicles drop for the 2nd straight month in August at -7.1% to 73.308, yet the year-to-date tally remains exceedingly in positive at +70.3% to 874.143. As a reminder, our Chinese New Energy updates include EVs, PHEVs, FCEVs and non-rechargeable hybrids. The brands podium remains unchanged on July with Toyota (+0.6%), Honda (+4193.8%) and Lexus (+129.4%) all braving the adverse market conditions with upticks. Leader in 2018 and so far in 2019, BYD (-70.3%) implodes to 4th place but the next 3 best-sellers, all Chinese, show impressive form: BAIC BJEV (+38.1%), Baojun (+460.6%) and GAC NE (+89.9%). Tesla (+519.5%) and BMW (+47.3%) also shine in the Top 10.

Model-wise, the Lexus ES Hybrid (+22520%) leaps up to 1st place thanks to the new generation, distancing the Toyota Levin Hybrid (+36.5%) and the best-selling EV this month: the BAIC BJEV EU-Series (+247.1%). These three nameplates are the only ones above 5.000 retail sales in August. The Honda Accord Hybrid (+1482.6%) and Baojun E100 (+387.5%) round up the Top 5 ahead of the Honda Odyssey Hybrid, best-selling new launch, while the GAC NE Aion S breaks into the Top 10 for the first time at #8.
