Paraguay Full Year 2018: Chevrolet Onix threatens Toyota Hilux for #1 in market up 28.9%

New car sales in Paraguay soar 28.9% year-on-year in 2018 to 35.890 units. Sedan and hatches surge 40.1% to 15.256, SUVs leap up 32.3% to 10.458, pickups gain 13.8% to 9.645 whereas the smallest categories decline: vans down 5.2% to 368 and minibuses down 17.3% to 163. Light vehicles sold in Paraguay come from Brazil at 37.1% vs. 34.6% in 2017, South Korea at 14.7% vs. 17.7% last year, Argentina at 13.2% vs. 14.5%, Mexico at 10.9% vs. 8%, China at 4.5% vs. 6.2%, Thailand at 3.7% vs. 2.3%, Japan at 3.6% vs. 3.8%, India at 3% vs. 3.9% and Germany at 2.9% vs. 3.7%.
We have a new brand leader this year in Paraguay: Chevrolet (+43.6%) improving its share to 15.6% vs. 14% a year ago and overtaking Kia (+26.3%) at 14.7% vs. 15%. Toyota (+25.5%) remains in third place ahead of Volkswagen (+62.4%) leapfrogging past Hyundai (-1.2%) in difficulty and losing 2.5 percentage points of market share. At #6, Nissan (+90.6%) is the biggest gainer in the Top 10 with Suzuki (+30.8%) also outpacing the market whereas Jeep (-13.1%) crumbles down but remains inside the country’s 10 favourite brands at #10.
Over in the models ranking, the Toyota Hilux (+13.4%) is the best-seller for at least the 8th consecutive year but the photo finish was very close with the Chevrolet Onix (+113.5%) more than doubling its volume year-on-year to end up just 72 units off the Hilux. The VW Gol (+174.5%) also posts a very impressive result and climbs onto the podium, knocking the Chevrolet S10 (+13.1%) down two ranks to #4. The Kia Rio (+77.5%), Nissan Frontier (+61.2%), Kia Picanto (+57.9%) and Toyota Fortuner (+51.6%) also shine while the Hyundai Creta lands directly inside the Top 10.
