The Malawi new vehicle market edges up 0.4% to 1.773 units in 2018. Toyota (+9.3%) tightens its grip further to cross the symbolic 50% market share for the first time since 2015 at 50.5%, whereas direct followers Nissan (-6.1%) and Ford (-4.4%) both see their share thaw to 15.7% and 9.7% respectively. But Tata (+37.1%), Kia (+30.2%), Mitsubishi (+182.4%) and Renault (87.5%) as well as Hyundai (+61.5%) all outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10. Model-wise, the Toyota Hilux (-20.2%) remains in pole position despite a steep decline, and in fact it’s the entire Top 4 that significantly drops this year, with the Toyota Land Cruiser (-9.9%), Ford Ranger (-10.2%) and Nissan Hardbody (-31.6%) all in difficulty. The rest of the Top 10 however display fantastic results all above +40%. The Mitsubishi Triton (+325%) and Kia Sportage (+123.5%) post the largest year-on-year gains followed by the Toyota Prado (+66.7%), Hiace (+65.2%), Fortuner (+63.6%) and Corolla (+41.4%) by far the best-selling passenger car in the country at #6 overall, distancing the Renault Kwid (+280%) at #18.
