Fiji is a South Pacific archipelago composed of 332 islands and more than 500 islets located about 2.000 km (1.300 mi) north of New Zealand. Almost 90% of the 900.000 inhabitants live in the two major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Fiji has one of the most developed economies in the Pacific due to an abundance of forest, mineral, and fish resources, and this translates into a more diverse new car market with no less than 17 manufacturers sharing official sales figures.
The Fijian new car market shoots up by a fantastic 20% year-on-year in 2018 to 4.598 registrations, lifted by an outstanding performance by brand leader Toyota (+71.7%) improving its share from 25.4% to 36.3%. Hyundai (+25.9%) also outpaces the market to reach 19.6%, distancing Isuzu (+3.8%) at 13.6%. Mazda (+74.6%) and Nissan (+52.7%) also impress in the Top 10 but Kia (-57.5%) and Ford (-12.9%) struggle. Looking into the sales detail of all Toyota models in the country unveils the reason behind teh brand’s sudden surge: the Hilux is up 3-fold (+227.1%) to leap from 6% share last year to 16.3% now, easily taking the models pole position above last year’s leader the Toyota Hiace (+11.6%) while the Land Cruiser 70 (+146.8%) also stun with a spectacular gain to 5% share.
