Vietnam January 2019: Honda CR-V surprise leader, Mitsubishi Xpander #7 in market up 28.6%

The Honda CR-V is the most popular nameplate in Vietnam in January.

The Vietnamese new vehicle market surges 28.6% year-on-year in January to 33.484 registrations, with new brands leader Toyota (+48.1%) cementing its pole position at 22.7% share and Mazda (+2.2%) stepping up to #2 overall above Thaco-Kia (-25.1%). Lexus (+263.8%), Honda (+147.7%), Peugeot (+143.2%), Mitsubishi (+118%) and Suzuki (+101.3%) post some of the largest gains in market this month. In the models ranking, the Honda CR-V (+281.5%) spectacularly takes the overall lead with 8.4% share, followed by the Mazda3 (+10.7%) and CX-5 (+17.2%), all toppling last 5 years’ leader the Toyota Vios (-19%). The Kia Cerato (+35.5%) rounds out the Top 5 like over the FY2018, while the all-new Mitsubishi Xpander is up 17 spots on December to a record 7th place. The Toyota Wigo (#12) and Rush (#14) are the two 2018 launches that also manage a Top 15 finish in January.
