New wholesales in Indonesia gain a sturdy 7% year-on-year in 2018 to 1.155.321 units, the market’s 7th year in a row above one million annual sales, its highest result since 2014 (1.208.019) and third highest all-time below 2013 (1.229.902). Retail sales are up 8% to 1.152.641. Brand leader Toyota (-5.2%) goes against the market but retains its stranglehold at 30.6% share vs. 34.4% last year. Daihatsu (+8.8%) outpaces the market and overtakes Honda (-13.2%) to take the 2nd spot with 17.6% share, while Mitsubishi (+84.3%) surges to #4 thanks to the Xpander, eclipsing Suzuki (+5.7%). All remaining Top 10 manufacturers bar Datsun (-0.5%) post spectacular gains, led by Chinese and recent local producer Wuling (+236.7%) breaking into the Top 10 for its first full year in market with 1.5% share but 2.6% in December. We covered Wuling’s entrance in the Indonesian market in our June 2017 update. Wuling is the only non-Japanese brand in the Indonesian Top 13, and one of only 3 Chinese carmakers on the market alongside Dongfeng (#18) up 668.6% and new entrant FAW (#23). Hino (+35%), Isuzu (+29.9%) and Mitsubishi Fuso (+17.3%) also shine in the Top 10 while further down Peugeot (+308.8%), Proton (+308.3%), Mazda (+46.5%) and Hyundai (+11.5%) make themselves noticed.

Wuling is the #9 carmaker in Indonesia for its first full year in market.

Model-wise, the Toyota Avanza (-29.4%) manages to post a 13th consecutive year as Indonesia’s most popular nameplate, but endures its steepest fall ever, is now on a bleak streak of 5 consecutive years of decline and has reached its lowest ever share at 7.1% (vs. a record of 20.6% in 2009) and lowest annual volume since 2007 at just over 82.000 units (vs. a record of 213.458 in 2013). But most importantly, the Avanza suffered the most pressing threat to its domination ever this year, in the name of the Mitsubishi Xpander. Making history, the Xpander topped the monthly charts 7 times between February and September and led the YTD order all the way until end-September, becoming the first non-Toyota nameplate to lead the Indonesian YTD charts in potentially 40 years. Add the surprise pole position of the Honda Brio Satya in November and never before had the Avanza held the Indonesian monthly top spot for so little time (only 4 months). The Xpander (+474.4%) ends 2018, its first full year in market, at a fantastic 2nd place with 6.5% share, distancing the Toyota Calya (-12.7%) and Kijang Innova (-3.5%) while the Rush (+165.2%) makes it 4 Toyotas in the Top 5 and takes advantage of a brand new generation. The Daihatsu Terios (+175.9%), Honda Brio (+23.8%), Suzuki Carry Pikap (+21.9%), Daihatsu Sigra (+13.1%) and Honda Brio Satya (+8.1%) also shine in the Top 25 while the Wuling Confero (+123.1%) breaks into it for the first time.
