Romania November 2018: Hyundai (+81%), Toyota (+46%), Ford (+30%) go against market down 10.8%

The Ford Ecosport is up 14-fold year-on-year in Romania this month.

The Romanian new car market recovers somewhat from its post-WLTP hangover but still endures a double-digit drop at -10.8% to 8.303 registrations, yet the year-to-date tally remans out of danger at +24% to 121.634 units. Homegrown brand leader Dacia (-16%) falls faster than the market but post a strong share at 28.1% vs. 27.6% year-to-date. In contrast, Hyundai (+81%), Toyota (+46%), Ford (+30%), Skoda (+24%) and BMW (+15%) all post spectacular gains in the remainder of the Top 15 with Peugeot (+4%) the only other carmaker in positive. Volkswagen (-15%) struggles again, while Nissan (-51%), Renault (-49%), Kia (-39%), Mercedes (-36%), Opel (-34%), Suzuki (-21%) and Mazda (-19%) all crumble down. Further down, Ssangyong (+267%), Mitsubishi (+169%), Volvo (+134%) and Jaguar (+55%) also impress.

Model-wise, the Dacia Logan (-16%) is by far the best-selling nameplate in the country for the 171st consecutive month despite a hefty loss, distancing the Dacia Duster (-21%) whereas the following three best-sellers all post double-digit gains: the Skoda Octavia (+53%), Dacia Sandero (+31%) and Ford Focus (+10%). The Ford Ecosport surges 1300% year-on-year and two spots on October to #7 vs. #17 so far this year. The Toyota C-HR (+200%), Hyundai i20 (+150%) and Tucson (+126%) all more than double their sales year-on-year within the Top 12. Other great performers include the Mercedes E-Class (+241%), Peugeot 2008 (+217%), VW Polo (+131%), Toyota Corolla (+79%), Toyota Yaris (+66%) and Skoda Superb (+38%). The Hyundai Kona (#33) is the most popular new nameplate (<12 months) ahead of the VW T-Roc (#50) and Skoda Karoq (#60).
