Mexico July 2018: Hyundai and Mazda resist in market down 6.4%

New light vehicle sales in Mexico lodge their 14th consecutive year-on-year drop in July at -6.4% to 114.323 registrations, pulling the year-to-date tally down 8.1% to 795.088. For the 6th month in a row, brand leader Nissan falls a lot faster than the market at -14% to 21.2% share vs. 22.4% so far in 2018. The Japanese carmaker however remains comfortably in the lead ahead of Chevrolet edging up 1% to 16.8% vs 15% YTD. Volkswagen (-26%) posts the sharpest loss in the Top 20 whereas just below, Toyota, Kia and Honda all gain 4%. Hyundai (+23%) and Mazda (+12%) are the heroes of the Top 10, both managing a double-digit increase. Further down, Land Rover (+143%), Volvo (+93%), Lamborghini (+50%), Jaguar (+40%), Infiniti (+43%), Suzuki (+28%), Cadillac (+27%), Lincoln (+25%), Audi (+23%), Mercedes (+19%) and Porsche (+17%) make themselves noticed. Newcomer BAIC is up 43% and two spots on its inaugural score in June to #24. Model-wise, the entire Top 9 remains unchanged on June with the Nissan Versa (-9%), Chevrolet Aveo (+34%) and Beat (+91%) on the podium, the latter overtaking the Nissan Pickup (-11%) to climb to #2 YTD. Strong performers include the Mazda2 (+319%, Toyota Prius (+87%), Kia Forte (+43%) and Honda HR-V (+33%).
