The new car sales in Argentina is worsening very fast: after 24 consecutive months of gains, June down 9.4% and July down 14.4%, August registrations dive 22.8% year-on-year to 65.347 units. A record start of the year still puts the YTD tally in positive at +3.8% and 627.612 deliveries, but this won’t last as prospects for the remainder of 2018 are dark due to the country’s precarious economic situation, rising inflation and the 55% devaluation of the local currency, the peso. Renault (-18%) takes the lead of the brands ranking for the first time since last January, but for just 11 sales above Volkswagen (26%) which remains #1 YTD. Ford (-22%), Chevrolet (-33%) and Toyota (-17%) complete the Top 5 and we have to wait until #9 to see the first carmaker in positive: Nissan (+25%) and Jeep (+23%). Further down, Dongfeng (+789%), Suzuki (+175%), Geely (+114%), Subaru (+30%), Mini (+15%) and Volvo (+15%) stand out.
The Ford Ka (+44%) scores its second ever monthly win in Argentina after last April thanks to a very solid year-on-year gain potentially linked to the arrival of the crossover-looking Freestyle variant. The Toyota Hilux (-13%) and Chevrolet Onix (-32%) complete the podium ahead of the Fiat Argo, the leader of the past two months, celebrating one year in market. The Toyota Etios (-26%) is stuck in 5th place but remains #1 YTD, the Renault Kwid becomes the most popular recent launch (<12 months) at #7 ahead of the Fiat Cronos at #19 and the VW Virtus at #29.
