New car sales in the Czech Republic manage their third positive month of the year in July at +10.1% to 21.638 units, a new record for the month. Thanks to this very satisfying result, the year-to-date tally is back to record levels at +0.8% to 165.422 registrations. Market leader Skoda fails to match its home market’s growth at +6%, resulting in a weak 26.2% share vs. 31.8% so far in 2018. Reversely, Volkswagen and Hyundai both advance 41% to 11.5% and 10.8% respectively. Peugeot (+59%), Citroen (+48%), Renault (+34%) and Toyota (+28%) also frankly outpace the market within the Top 10 whereas Dacia (-27%) and Ford (-13%) put the brakes on. Among smaller brands, Bentley (+200%), Lexus (+106%), Subaru (+84%) and Jeep (+44%) stand out. The models podium is stable with the Skoda Octavia (+0.5%), Fabia (+17%) and Rapid (+8%) in the lead followed by the Hyundai i30 (+12%) and ix20 (+95%). The VW Tiguan surges 240% to #7, posting the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 15, while the Ford Fiesta (+836%), Ford Kuga (+207%), Hyundai i10 (+114%) and Peugeot 2008 (+99%) also shine.

  1. Those figures absolutely don’t reflect the real “street share” of brands and models in the country. While the most cars sold in the Czech Republic are used ones imported from other European countries, so it’s hard to estimate judging just by your eye, I’m absolutely sure Volkswagen is nowhere near the top of the real domestic sales chart. I’ve probably only seen the latest generation of VW Golf once of twice on the street or in the traffic. The reason for VW’s second place is Germans and Austrians (who love German cars for patriotic reasons) are buying VW cars in the Czech Republic where they are cheaper (still really overpriced in compare with other brands which is the reason why the real VW share in the country is small). Outside of the main cities, Volkswagen has the highest density of dealerships near the German border and I believe those are the ones pushing sales up. The only quite frequent VW model in the Czech republic is Passat, mostly bought as a company fleet. I believe the similar situation with German re-export is with Dacia which is definitely not in the top 10 but still better than VW. Most people (even those with highly qualified occupation) can’t afford any new car including Dacia so they buy used cars and for those with enough money Dacia is not prestigious enough. For German pensioner of young family it’s a good buy.

    1. Than you very much for this insight Matej – I have just travelled in Eastern Europe (south) and the situation is very similar in Bulgaria where new sales figures don’t reflect the “real” situation in the streets due to a very high rate of re-exports towards other countries in the European Union.
      All the best,
      Matt
