New light vehicle sales in Turkey are down 6.4% year-on-year in April to 71.126, pulling the YTD volume back into negative territory at -1.1% to 229.556 units. Brand leader Renault defies the surrounding depleted environment with a stellar 13% year-on-year gain to 15.7% share, one percentage point above its YTD level of 14.7%. Volkswagen (-14%), Fiat (-16%) and Ford (-20%) follow but all drops faster than the market with double-digit declines. Toyota (+19%) posts the largest gain in the Top 10 with Peugeot (+1%) also in positive, but just. Further down, Mitsubishi (+157%), Porsche (+100%), Volvo (+86%), Jeep (+60%), DS (+54%), Mini (+51%), BMW (+45%), Mazda (+34%), Subaru (+28%), Suzuki (+23%) and Maserati (+20%) all impress with spectacular gains whereas Smart (-79%), Citroen (-59%), Jaguar (-50%), Ssangyong (-33%) and Land Rover (-26%) fall apart.
…and the Megane at #2. YTD, the order is reversed.
Model-wise, Renault justifies its runaway brand leadership by posting its second 1-2 in the past three months: the Clio (+33%) is the best-seller above the Megane (+16%) but the order is reversed YTD. The Fiat Egea (-17%) falls two spots on March to #3 ahead of the VW Passat (+30%) and Ford Transit (+5%). The Toyota Corolla (+63%) manages the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 25, followed by the Hyundai Accent Blue (+50%), Peugeot 3008 (+44%), VW Transporter (+36%), Opel Corsa (+35%), Nissan Qashqai (+34%) and VW Golf (+24%). Below, notice the Mitsubishi L200 (+216%), Audi A6 (+197%), Ford Kuga (+137%) and Toyota Hilux (+114%). The Turkish market isn’t very welcoming of new nameplates this year with the Skoda Karoq topping recent launches (<12 months) at a low #61 (+20) above the Opel Grandland X at #77 (-16), the Hyundai Kona landing directly at #85 and the Mercedes X-Class at #90 (-19).
