South Africa April 2018: Toyota Hilux soars 36% to cement lead

The Toyota Hilux has topped South African sales for 8 of the past 10 months,

The South African new vehicle market is up 3.6% year-on-year in April to 36.346 units, leading to a YTD volume down 2.6% to 177.617 registrations. The Top three manufacturers all beat the market with Toyota and the Volkswagen Group both up 9% and Hyundai-Kia up 35%, overtaking Ford down 19%. Mazda (+38%), Nissan (+19%), the BMW Group (+9%) and Renault (+8%) also do very well whereas General Motors/Isuzu (-54%) and Mercedes (-15%) struggle. Outside the Top 10, Jaguar Land Rover (+63%), Volvo (+50%), Suzuki (+46%) and Mahindra (+26%) shine.

Model-wise, the Toyota Hilux lodges an 8th win in the past 10 months thanks to deliveries surging 36% to 7.4% share, with the Ford Ranger (+20%) in tow. The VW Polo Vivo (+28%) and VW Polo (+21%) also post sizeable gains below. The Isuzu KB (+2%) is up three spots to #5, distancing the Nissan NP200 (-12%) and Toyota Quantum (-8%) both in difficulty while the Hyundai Grand i10 soars 129% to #8 and the Kia Picanto surges 87% to #10. The Hyundai Creta (#14) is the best-selling recent launch above the Suzuki Ignis (#42), Volvo XC40 (#66) and Opel Crossland X (#78).
