After a relative respite in February (-7.2%), the Mexican market returns to double-digit declines for the third time in the past 4 months at -13.4% to 118.611 units, leading to a Q1 volume down 10.8% to 337.262. For the second straight month, the top three most popular carmaker in the country fall faster than the market: Nissan drops 24% to 24% share, Chevrolet is down 18% to 15.9% which is actually 3.5 percentage points above its YTD level of 12.4% and enables the brand to reclaim the #2 YTD spot off Volkswagen, itself down 25% to 10.9% at #3. In the Top 10, Hyundai (+13%), Kia (+13%), Honda (+4%), Mazda (+2%) and Renault (+0.1%) all manage a year-on-year gain while outside, in actual fact there are more growing brands than declining ones, compensating for the heavy losses of the top-sellers. Land Rover (+224%), Jaguar (+82%), Volvo (+58%), Suzuki (+57%), Lamborghini (+50%), Lincoln (+45%), Jeep (+36%), Smart (+21%), BMW (+14%), Ferrari (+14%), Porsche (+13%), Mini (+12%) and Buick (+11%) all defy the market conditions by posting double-digit gains.
The Chevrolet Cavalier breaks into the Mexican Top 20 for the 2nd time, hitting a record #16.
Model-wise, the Nissan Versa (+5%) remains the best-seller, while the Chevrolet Beat returns to the #2 spot it held last November with 5.9% share, now ranking #3 YTD. The Nissan Pickup (-14%) and Chevrolet Aveo (-23%) get each knocked down one spot to #3 and #4 respectively, with the Nissan March (-12%), VW Vento (-35%), Jetta (-14%), Nissan Sentra (-30%) and Honda CR-V (-28%) camp on their February position. Among them only one nameplate gets a year-on-year uplift: the Kia Rio (+4%). Below, notice the Kia Sportage (+18%), Honda HR-V (+28%) and City (+20%) while among newcomers the Chevrolet Cavalier is up a whopping 38 spots on February to a record #16, the Hyundai Accent is up 3 to #22 and the Honda BR-V up 64 on its inaugural month to break into the Mexican Top 50 for its 2nd month on sales at #48.
