European new car sales (27 markets excluding Russia and Turkey) is up a robust 5.2% in November to 1.250.281 units, lifting the year-to-date tally up 3.8% to 14.435.691. Double-digit gains in France and Spain and a strong 9.4% increase in Germany have more than compensated the collapse of the UK market down 11.2% this month, with Italy (+5.2%) and a handful of smaller markets fuelling the growth, such as Austria (+15.9%), Croatia (+24.4%), Greece (+10.6%), Hungary (+31.3%), the Netherlands (+17.1%) and Slovenia (+17.9%). Along with the UK, only the Czech Republic (-1%), Romania (-3.5%) and Ireland (-8%) are down. Once again it’s SUVs that pull the market up to new heights with sales up a stunning 21.6% to 398.414 units or 31.9% market share vs. just 27.6% a year ago. Small SUVs are up 25.5%, compact SUVs up 16.6% and midsize SUVs up 41%. The performance of each brand in this segment generally dictates how well it does continent-wide.

The Peugeot 208 enjoys a second consecutive podium ranking in Europe.

Volkswagen has no difficulty remaining the most popular carmaker in Europe but once again underperforms at just +1.5%. In a Top 6 unchanged on October, Ford (+5.7%) and most strikingly Peugeot (+20.7%) gain market share vs. a year ago while Mercedes (+5%), Renault (+4.1%) and Opel/Vauxhall (-4.1%, handicapped by a paltry UK score) lose some. In the remainder of the Top10, Audi (+8.4%), Skoda (+10.8%) and Toyota (+12.2%) outpace the overall growth whereas BMW drops 1.6%. Further down, Jeep (+28.9%), Suzuki (+24%), Dacia (+21.4%), Mini (+21.3%), Kia (+17%), Mazda (+15.1%), Citroen (+14.1%) lead the gain ladder while among smaller brands Tesla (+177.3%), McLaren (169%), Lada (+155.1%), MG (+79.5%), Ferrari (+57%) and Alfa Romeo (+26.1%) are among the best performers. Reversely, among the rare carmakers to lose ground year-on-year, Aston Martin (-9.4%), Maserati (-11.3%) and Lancia (-11.4%) are the hardest hit.

The Renault Scenic posts the 2nd largest year-on-year gain in the Top 50 at +126%.

Uncontested leader in the models ranking, the VW Golf brilliantly manages to post a third consecutive double-digit gain at +18.1%, with its YTD cume now down just 1.9%. The Renault Clio clings onto the 2nd place in spite of a 4.8% drop while the Peugeot 208 lodges a second podium ranking in a row thanks to deliveries up 18.9% heaped by a rental fleet deal in Germany. It is the first time the 208 ever ranks on the European podium two months in a row and only its sixth time in the Top 3 after August 2012 (#3), October 2012 (#3), December 2012 (#2), May 2013 (#3) and last month (#3), and its November score propels the 208 to #6 YTD above the Opel Corsa. The Ford Fiesta remains at #4, the Skoda Octavia is up one spot to #5 while the VW Tiguan (+1.6%) and Renault Captur (+4.5%) top the SUV charts above the Nissan Qashqai (+0.3%) The Ford Focus is up 10.8% to #9 and the Toyota Yaris ranks inside the European Top 10 for the fifth month in a row, now #14 YTD.

Opel/Vauxhall Insignia sales are up 70.8% thanks to the new generation.

Below the Citroen C3 up 42.3% to #11, the Peugeot 3008 breaks its European ranking record for the third time in the past five months, lifting it to #12 and only 402 sales off a historical first Top 10 ranking, beating the #14 hit last month and #17 last July. In the remainder of the Top 20, the Dacia Sandero continues to gallop ahead at +31.6%, whereas the Opel Corsa (-15.2%), Astra (-30.8%) and VW Polo (-42%) in the midst of a generation changeover, all struggle. Further down, notice the Renault Scenic up 126%, Opel Insignia up 70.8%, Ford Kuga up 59.7%, the Mercedes GLC up 47.6%, VW Up up 22.9%, Mercedes E-Class up 24.1%, BMW X1 up 18.9%, VW Touran up 18.8% and the BMW 5 Series up 14.4%. The Toyota C-HR celebrates one year in market with an 11th consecutive Top 50 ranking.
