New car sales in the UAE are down 12% year-on-year in August to 21.027 units, faring a little better than year-to-date down a harsh 18% to 173.921 registrations. Leader Toyota follows the market with a 13% decline to 31.6% market share vs. 30.3% year-to-date, but once again Nissan stands out as the only manufacturer to gain ground in the Top 10 with a splendid 25% year-on-year increase to 21.9% share vs. 17.2% so far in 2017. Mitsubishi (-3%), Kia (-8%) and BMW (-9%) lose less ground than the market but Ford (-20%), Chevrolet (-23%), Honda (-42%) and most strikingly Hyundai (-69%) all freefall. Further down the ranking, GMC (+17%), Mazda (+44%), Hino (+22%) and Peugeot (+5%) are the only Top 25 carmakers in positive, with Lincoln (+150%), Ram (+118%) and McLaren (+100%) dominating smaller brands. Chinese SAIC-MG (+7%) and Geely (+32%) also both gain ground year-on-year.
Over in the models ranking, the Nissan Patrol soars 67% year-on-yera to break the 10% market share barrier at 10.3%, increasing the gap over its archenemy the Toyota Land Cruiser down 5% to 7.5% share. Year-to-date, the Patrol also leads with 7.4% of the market thanks to deliveries up 35% vs. -7% and 6.7% for the Land Cruiser. In August, the Toyota Prado jumps 42% to land in third position, with the Mitsubishi Lancer EX also very impressive at #4 and +64%. Even though the BMW X5 is up just 5%, this means an outstanding 5th place overall for the luxury SUV in the UAE. Toyota also places the Hilux (-53%), Camry (+16%) and Corolla (+6%) in the Top 8. Notice also the Ford Escape up 162% to #24 thanks to the new generation. The Nissan Kicks (#24) dominates recent launches (<12 months) ahead of the Geely Emgrand GT (#101), Fiat Fullback (#128, Dodge Neon (#137), Chevrolet Trailblazer (#141) and Mazda CX-3 (#144).
