The Norwegian new car market is down 2.7% year-on-year in September to 13.484 units, leading to a year-to-date total up just 0.4% to 116.358 registrations. The performer of the month in Norway is without a doubt electric carmaker Tesla, striking again but this time with even more strength. September results show the U.S. carmaker broke the 2.000 monthly sales barrier for the first time in its history – the brand launched here in July 2013 – at 2.003 units, only 80 below market leader Volkswagen. This equals to a staggering 14.9% share of the Norwegian market. For perspective, its previous bests in Norway were 1.493 sales and 10.8% share in March 2014 when it also ranked #2 and when the Model S was by far the best-seller in the country, this for the third time after September and December 2013. Tesla had only managed to break the 1.000 monthly unit barrier once more: in March 2015 when it sold 1.140 for a 8.1% share and third place overall.

The Volvo V90 is up to 4th place in Norway this month thanks to its PHEV variant.

This month Tesla places both its two nameplates on the Norwegian podium: below the VW Golf up 37% to 10.1% share (69% for the e-Golf), the Model S is up 4-fold on September 2016 to 1.007 sales and 7.5% share, its best result in 2.5 years – since March 2015, while the Model X is up 66% year-on-year to smash its volume and share records at 996 units and 7.4%, previous best being 609 and 4.3% last June. It’s fair to say Norwegian customers cannot wait for the new Model 3… Other great performers in Norway this month include Volvo up 26%, Porsche up 38%, Hyundai up 42% and Mini up 158%. Model-wise, notice the Volvo V90 shooting up 10 spots on August to #4 pushed by the PHEV variant accounting for 60% of its sales this month, the Mercedes GLC up 82% to #20, the Peugeot 3008 up 7-fold to #23, the BMW 5 Series up 176% and the Mini Countryman up 10-fold.
