50.396 new light vehicles found a buyer in Egypt over the First Half of 2017, corresponding to an estimated 40% year-on-year decline, following another 40% decline in FY2016. The brands ranking is completely reshuffled, with Nissan surging from #3 in FY16 to pole position so far in 2017 with 21.4% share, edging past Chevrolet at 20.9% while Hyundai, leader in 2016, tumbles down from 23.1% to 13.8% and third place. Toyota (9.3%) overtakes Kia for #4, Mitsubishi is up one spot to #6, Renault doubles its market share from 2% and #11 to 4% and #7, while Speranza (the Egyptian name for Chinese brand Chery) is down three spots and one percentage point of market share to #9. Notice also Ford gaining 7 ranks to #10.
In the models ranking, the Chevrolet TFR Pickup gains almost three percentage points of share to 13.3% and cements its leadership while the Nissan Sunny soars from 7.3% in FY16 to a round 10% so far this year, earning the 2nd spot overall. The main reason behind Hyundai’s slump this year in Egypt is the discontinuation of the antediluvian Hyundai Verna which was sold almost exclusively as a taxi. The Verna/Accent combo is down from 8.6% in FY16 to just 5.7% in third place. On the other hand the Nissan Qashqai jumps 14 spots to land an a stunning 4th place with 5.6% share. The Chevrolet Optra – a rebadged Baojun 630 – is up 24 spots to break into the Top 10 while the Kia Cerato is up 3 to #10. We welcome the Renault Kadjar directly into the Top 30 at #27.
