The Slovakian new car market is up 13.7% year-on-year in 2016 to 87.901 units excluding Light Commercial Vehicles. Skoda remains distant leader in the brands sales charts with a round 20% share and sales up 5% on last year. It distances Volkswagen, struggling at -4%, Hyundai (+6%) and Kia following the market at +14%. Opel (+5%) overtakes Peugeot (-14%) while Suzuki is up by a smashing 51% and 6 spots to break into the Top 10 at #7. The Japanese manufacturer is boosted by the tremendous success of the Vitara – up 86% to 5th place overall for its first full year of sales. Renault (+10%) and Dacia (+14%) both sport double-digit gains and hold onto their position but Mercedes (+9%) is the 2nd carmaker to break into the Top 10 for 2016, knocking Citroen and Ford out.
Model-wise, the Skoda Fabia drops 1% but remains the best-seller in Slovakia for the second year running and the 18th time in the past 22 years. It holds off the Skoda Octavia, leader in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014, up 11% but still #2. The Skoda Rapid (-2%) makes the Slovakian podium 100% Skoda for the fourth consecutive year. The Kia Cee’d (+12%) is once again the most popular foreign nameplate but the Suzuki Vitara ends 2016 only 47 units below, overtaking the Hyundai i30 (-1%) and VW Golf (-11%), The Hyundai Tucson is up 4-fold on its 2015 score to land at #7 for the first full year of this generation, the Opel Astra is lifted up 51% by the new model and the Skoda Superb doubles its 2015 result to break into the 10 most popular nameplates in the country.
