The Swiss new car market gains 8% year-on-year in September to 26.145 registrations, however the year-to-date tally is still down 3% to 232.183 units. Volkswagen remains master in command with 12.9% share and beats the market with a 24% year-on-year improvement. In fact, 8 of the Top 10 brands outpace the market in September: in order, Mercedes (+14%), BMW (+33%), Skoda (+20%), Opel (+12%), Ford (+19%), Renault (+24%) and Toyota (+24%). Notice also Seat (+28%), Kia (+71%), Mini (+55%), Tesla (+101%) and Jaguar (+101%) all posting robust to spectacular gains. At the other end of the scale, Citroen (-23%), Hyundai (-25%), Suzuki (-25%), Nissan (-32%) and Peugeot (-45%) all struggle.
The VW Tiguan is up 257% to #2 while the Seat Ateca jumps to #37.
Model-wise, the Skoda Octavia (+7%) reclaims the year-to-date pole position off the VW Golf (-34%) thanks to 1.003 sales this month vs. just 730 for the Golf down to #3. 2016 tallies add up to 8.670 (-10%) for the clavier vs. 8.460 (-24%) for the Golf. If the Octavia was to hold on to its advantage until the end of the year, this would have the effect of a large earthquake in Swiss car sales, as the Golf has held the title of best-selling car in Switzerland for the past 22 consecutive years. The last time the VW Golf did not end the year at #1 in Switzerland was in 1993 when the Opel Astra toped the charts… The new generation VW Tiguan, up 257% on the previous model to #2 overall in September may be partly responsible for this month’s paltry Golf performance.
First Top 100 ranking for the Renault Talisman in Switzerland.
Other great gainers atop the models charts include the VW Polo (+53%), Mercedes C Class (+33%), Fiat 500 (+29%), VW Touran (+305%), Opel Mokka (+51%), Audi A3 (+58%), Ford Kuga (+79%), Mercedes GLC (+81%) and Toyota RAV4 (+211%). The Seat Ateca soars 83 spots on August to #37, the Tesla Model X is up 115 to #54, the Renault Talisman breaks into the Swiss Top 100 for the first time at #98, the Alfa Romeo Giulia is up 20 to #113, the Kia Niro lands directly at #118 and the Cadillac XT5 at #217.
