New light vehicle sales in Canada mark a third consecutive month of decline in September at -0.5% to 173.460 units after dropping 3% in July and 2% in August. The year-to-date tally remains firmly in record territory however at 1.507.975 units, up 3% on the same period in 2015. Ford Motor Co. confirms it has reclaimed the reins of the Canadian market with sales up 7% to 30.151 ahead of General Motors up 2% to 25.466 but the big news is the tumbling down of FCA Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, leader over FY2015 and half-way through 2016 but down 18% in September to 19.639 sales, saving its third spot off Toyota Motor (19.233) by the skin of its teeth.

In fact, it’s fair to say FCA is solely responsible for Canada’s overall sales drop in September as the market bar FCA is actually up 2%. Dodge (-8%), Ram (-22%), Chrysler (-45%), Fiat (-66%) and Alfa Romeo (-95%) all fall heavily with discontinued marque Scion (-73%) the only non-FCA brand to display such paltry results. Once again Ford widens the gap with its followers in the brands ranking at +7% to 29.290 ahead of Toyota at 16.903 (+2%), Honda at 15.609 (+3%) and Chevrolet at 14.717 (+5%). Audi impresses with a 27% gain to 2.739 sales, with Kia (+10%), Subaru (+9%), Cadillac (+8%), Land Rover (+13%), Porsche (+14%) and Volvo (+34%) also solid.

The models ranking is the theatre of yet another all-time record month by the Ford F-Series up a stunning 21% to 15.659 sales, the fourth time in 2016 that the F-Series has broken this record, after March (13.385)April (13.957) and August (14.197). The F-Series sells 2.35 times the #2, the Ram Pickup down 23% to 6.655 while the Honda Civic is down 12% to 6.091. Year-to-date, the F-Series now stands at a record-breaking 115.674 units after 9 months, up 26% on the same period in 2015 and already just below the 118.837 sales it racked up over the Full Year 2015. Next month – with just 10 months under its belt – the F-Series will surpass its two record years 126.277 units from 2014 and 122.325 from 2013.

The GMC Sierra ranks 6th above the Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla but they all lose ground vs. September 2015 as does the Chevrolet Silverado at #10. Further down, notice the Nissan Rogue up 16% to #12, the Hyundai Santa Fe up 15% to #14, the Mazda CX-5 up 12% to #15, Hyundai Tucson up 19% to #20, Hyundai Accent up 39% to #21, Chevrolet Malibu up 83% to #24 and Kia Sportage up 73% to #32.
