An unending thirst for new light vehicles: that’s what has characterised Canadian customers for the past three years and it continues in 2016: sales are up 9% year-on-year in March to a record 175.407 units, lifting the year-to-date total to an all-time best 403.653 sales, also up 9% on the same period last year. If Ford Motor outsells FCA this month thanks to sales up 24% to 26.432 vs. 25.862 (+3%), Fiat Chrysler Automobiles remains the year-to-date leader at 62.831 units (+2%), distancing Ford Motor at 61.458 (+21%). General Motors (+17%) and Toyota Motor (+14%) follow while Hyundai-Kia (-2%) rounds up the Top 5. Honda Motor (+11%) and Nissan Moor (+13%) both beat the market. Brand-wise, Ford remains by far the most popular with 14.7% share above Toyota (9.3%), Honda (8.4%) and Chevrolet (8.2%). Jeep (+36%), BMW (+15%), Audi (+43%), Mitsubishi (+24%) and Land Rover (+85%) shine, while it’s a last hurrah for Scion (+136%) clearing its stock before the brand gets discontinued in June.

In the models ranking, the Ford F-Series shoots up an impressive 34% year-on-year to 13.385 sales, simply the nameplate’s highest ever monthly score – beating its previous best of 12.740 units hit almost three years ago in May 2013. This astounding performance means it now has a 10.000-sales advantage over the #2, the Ram Pickup, down 5% this month, at 32.204 sales (+25%) vs. 22.336 (+8%). The Honda Civic benefits from its new generation and gains 4 spots on February to #3, followed by the Hyundai Elantra (+33%). The GMC Sierra (+10%) is getting caught up by its mass market twin the Chevrolet Colorado (+26%), the Jeep Cherokee is up 31% to #14, the Ford Edge up 275% to #17, the Chevy Malibu up 73% to #20 and the Toyota Camry up 50% to #21. Finally, we welcome the Chrysler Pacifica back into the Canadian sales charts at #245.
