The Malaysian new car market is hit hard by the Lunar new year period falling earlier than last year with sales down a harsh 25% to just 37.876 units, pulling the year-to-date total down 18% to 82.467. Perodua follows the market at -25% and holds onto an extremely strong 37% market share, while Proton falls faster a -28% to a weak 15.7% share. Honda (-7%) resists at 14.8% share, almost double its follower Toyota (-42%) with Nissan and Mazda (-21%) both improving their presence slightly. Isuzu (+1%), Volkswagen (+7%), BMW (+19%) and Mercedes (+33%) go against the grain, all posting positive results. Model-wise, it’s a podium 100% Perodua this month with the Axia at 17.1% share – more than any other brand, the Myvi at 10.1% and the Alza at 9.8% all distancing the Proton Saga (9.5%). The Honda HR-V hits its best ever share at 6.6%, above the Honda City and Nissan Almera. The VW Polo (#17)  and Mercedes GLE (#49) also make themselves noticed.
