For the very first time on BSCB, we can share with you official sales data for French Guiana, a French overseas territory located on the Atlantic Ocean coast in south america, west of Brazil. French Guiana (simply Guyane in French) is not to be confused with Guyana, an independent country located a little further west. In fact, the addition of the adjective “French” is reminiscent of colonial times when five such colonies existed (the Guianas), namely from west to east: Spanish Guiana (now Guayana Region in Venezuela), British Guiana (now Guyana), Dutch Guiana (now Suriname), French Guiana, and Portuguese Guiana (now Amapá in Brazil). French Guiana, Suriname and Guyana are still referred to as the Guianas (see map below).

French Guiana is home to 250.000 inhabitants and famous for the Devil’s Island prison in Cayenne (operated from 1852 to 1953) as well as its rocket-launching base in Kourou. The French Guianese new car market is up by a shy 2% in 2015 to 5.573 registrations, still below its all-time high of 6.080 reached in 2008. Peugeot is the most popular carmaker here with 16.6% share above Renault (15.3%) and Volkswagen, but the Renault Clio (+34%) takes the lead of the models ranking this year, bypassing the Peugeot 208 (+5%) while the Dacia Sandero surges 67% to land on the podium. Unlike metropolitan France, the Toyota Hilux is the best-selling commercial vehicle here, ahead of the Renault Kangoo.
