The Swedish new car market is going from strength to strength this year: up year-on-year for the 19th consecutive month at +17% in July to 23.904 registrations, the highest July score since records began in Sweden in 1970. The year-to-date total now stands at 191.888 units, up 11% on 2014. As it gains slightly less ground than the market at +15% to 4.260 deliveries, domestic manufacturer Volvo is under threat from Volkswagen, up 45% to 4.061 sales. Audi (+13%) and Kia (+21%) overtake Toyota (+8%) and BMW (+9%) while Mercedes (+41%), Nissan (+38%), Fiat (+31%), Citroen (+47%) and Mazda (+39%) impress.
This Volvo-Volkswagen situation is mirrored in the models ranking where the Volvo V70 (+23%) is teased by the VW Golf (+74%) at 1.696 and 1.652 sales respectively. The Volvo XC60 is also very strong +54% while the VW Passat drops by 20% year-on-year despite the arrival of the new generation in dealerships. In fact, most Volkswagen nameplates display explosive gains this month, the result of an aggressive promotion campaign: the Polo is up 4-fold to 5th place, the Tiguan up 88% to #16, the Touran up 4-fold to #27 and the Touareg up 268% to #51. Notice also the Skoda Fabia up 87% to #9, the Nissan Qashqai up 72% to #11, the Audi A3 up 75% to #12, the new generation Volvo XC90 up 4 spots on June to #22 and the Tesla Model S up 506% on July 2014 to #62.
