The Kazakh new car market continues to suffer from the afflux of grey-market new imports from Russia, freefalling 39% year-on-year in June to 8.891 registrations which brings the half year total to 53.635 units, down 30% on 2014. In the brands ranking, Lada is in great difficulty at just 21.9% share vs. 31.4% year-to-date – note however that this share is still higher than at home in Russia where Lada held 18.8% in June. Hyundai lodges another very strong month at 15.8% vs. 12.4% so far in 2015, overtaking Kia at 12.5% in June and 10.9% YTD. Toyota (8.3%) is back above Renault (8%) like in the YTD ranking, GAZ is back to #6, UZ-Daewoo is up 4 spots on last month to #7, Chinese manufacturer Geely is up to #12 both in June (2.5% share) and year-to-date (1.8%), Kamaz is up to #14, Honda up to #20 and Mazda up to #21.
The Lada Granta is outsold for the 2nd month running.
Model-wise, after the Kia Rio was the first non-Lada nameplate to take the lead in years last month, the Hyundai Accent, #2 in May, takes the relay in June making it two consecutive months of Korean leadership. The Accent only needed to match its year-to-date market share (7.9%) at 699 sales to rank #1 as the Lada Granta is well below its 2015 level at 7.6% vs. 10.1% so far. In this aspect, Kazakhstan follows the Russian market where the Accent and the Rio have been battling the Granta for the top spot in the past 6 months. The Hyundai Elantra also shines in 5th place with 4.9% share vs. #9 and 2.7% year-to-date, with the Toyota Camry up 4 spots on May to #9, the UZ-Daewoo Nexia up 10 to #14 and the Hyundai i30 up 21 to #28.
