Amidst the stock market turmoil created by the sudden increase in value of the swiss franc against the euro (+23% on January 15 alone) and US dollar (+21%), and key interest rates now frankly in negative (-0.75%) meaning investors need to pay a fee to keep their funds in a Swiss account, the Swiss new car market doesn’t do well at all at the start on 2015: down another 9% year-on-year in January to just 18,400 registrations. Volkswagen delivers an outstanding 14% increase to capture 14% of the market, while both BMW (-1%) and Mercedes (+13%) rank on the podium, dislodging Audi down 21% to #7. Notice Renault up 18%, Mazda up 10%, Ford up 27%, Nissan up 13% and Porsche up 99%.
The BMW X3 is up to a record Swiss #7 in January.
For the first time on BSCB and from this month onwards I give you an all-models ranking for Switzerland, always very volatile due to its extreme fragmentation: only 3 nameplates manage to capture more than 2% market share: the VW Golf (5%), Skoda Octavia (3.8%) and VW Polo (2.4%). Below, the Mercedes C-Class shoots up 17 spots on December to #4, the Mazda CX-5 is up a monumental 49 ranks to beat its all-time ranking record at #5 (previous best: #6 one year ago), the BMW X3 is up 34 spots to an all-time high #7 (previous best: #8 also a year ago) but the Mazda2 trumps them all: up 101 ranks thanks to the new generation to a record #8 with 233 sales and 1.3% share.
