New car sales in Portugal are up a spectacular 28% year-on-year in January to 11.852 registrations. A new pattern is emerging in Portuguese sales: January is becoming the month of premium brands, principally due to the fact that a lot of car leases start or get renewed at the start of the calendar year. If Peugeot leads the brands ranking with 1,205 sales and 10.2% share, it is only 11 units above BMW at 10.1% while Mercedes jumps to third place with 1,138 deliveries for a brilliant 9.6% share. Volkswagen is down to #4 and Renault down to #5, but Citroen is up 63% year-on-year to #6, Nissan up 78% to #8, Volvo up 54% to #14, Mini up 98% to #19, Porsche up 90%, Jaguar up 93% and Jeep up 267%.
BMW misses out on the brands pole position for just 11 sales.
The models ranking reflects the sudden surge of premium German brands. Below the VW Golf (3.5%), Peugeot 308 (3.3%) and VW Polo (3.1%), the Audi A3 is up 8 spots on December to a shiny 4th position, the Mercedes A-Class is up 17 to #7, the C-Class up 9 to #8, the BMW 4 Series is up 38 to #24, the 2 Series up 25 to #32, Mercedes GLA up 10 to #34, the CLA up 11 to #36, the Audi Q3 up 32 to #38, the BMW X3 up 75 to #62, X5 up 53 to #64 and the X4 up 28 to #74. Notice also the Renault Captur inside the Top 10, the Citroen C4 Cactus up 24 spots to #20, the Mini up to #27 and the Smart Forfour up to #48.
