As is now the tradition on BSCB, I give you the German Private Sales rankings as an appetiser for overall German data. German Private Sales (PS) data is always a little controversial, as the definition of a private sale isn’t 100% accurate. Are counted as private the cars sold to private buyers, not the ones actually used by private buyers. Long-term leases for example are counted as non-private, and it explains the fact that as cars become more expensive, their PS ratio tends to drop: a lot of them are on a long-term lease, so used privately but not counted as a private sale. In October there were 95,811 new Private Sales in Germany, a 34.8% PS ratio, a notch below the year-to-date ratio of 36.8%.

This month German private buyers are buying into what can be considered national brands more so than usual. Taking into account Seat and Skoda are 100% owned by Volkswagen and Ford’s German subsidiary is considered by local buyers as a national brand, the only true foreigner in the Top 20 is the Dacia Sandero at #19. The VW Golf (29% PS ratio) and Polo (62.4%) top the ranking, followed by the Audi A3 (36.9%) up 5 spots on September to #3 and the VW Tiguan (48.3%) back up 14 ranks to #4. Notice also the excellent performances of the Mercedes A-Class up to #6, Toyota Aygo up to #22 vs. #73 YTD and Mitsubishi Space Star at #29 vs. #65.
