The Czech new car market continues to evolve at records levels this year: up another 19% year-on-year in September to 15,775 registrations which brings the year-to-date total to 141,470 units, up 18% on 2013 and the strongest 9 months score ever in Czech Republic. Skoda is back up to 31.6% share vs. 28.9% year-to-date but vs. 35.6% in September 2013. Hyundai is up to a very robust 11.6% share vs. 9.7% so far in 2014 but the big news is elsewhere: according to local website Vybermiauto.cz, Hyundai was the most popular brand with private buyers, above Skoda (!), both in August and September. They also quote Skoda PR manager as relativising the situation by saying “According to our reports, Škoda continues the undisputed leader in private and corporate sales. For example car leasing is counted as a corporate sale although the car is used by private customers.” Still, an interesting and significant development. Ford shoots up to #4 with 7.4% vs. 3.8% year-to-date while Opel ranks 5th at 4.2% and Dacia is down to #7 vs. #4 so far in 2014.
Model-wise, Skoda still monopolises the podium with the Octavia (11%), Rapid (7.4%) and Fabia (4.3%) while the Ford Fiesta becomes the best-selling foreign model in 4th position with 576 sales and 3.7% above the VW Golf and Hyundai i30. The Hyundai i20 is down 3 spots on August to #8 but remains way above its year-to-date level at 2.8% share vs. 1.8%. Other great performers this month include the Opel Zafira at #16 vs. #42 year-to-date, Opel Meriva at #17 vs. #35, Mitsubishi ASX at #24 vs. #44, Hyundai i10 at #25 vs. #48 and the Mercedes GLA up 31 ranks on August to #60. Finally, we welcome two newcomers in the Czech Top 100 in September: the Mercedes V Class and BMW X4 both equal #96 with 25 units sold.
